HR jobs in Vegas are gaining recognition

A new survey from Careerbuilder is spotlighting the importance of HR jobs in Vegas, among other locations.

Sixty percent of CEOs reported their companies have not been able to reach their full potential because they cannot find enough qualified candidates, and almost one fourth (23 percent) say the pressure to raise wages is among issues that keep them up at night.

According to the survey, characteristics of this new recruiting era include:

Expectations that HR teams will interpret data and ascertain the right talent mix.
•The overwhelming majority of CEOs (90 percent) say it is important that HR leaders be proficient in workforce analytics, with about one in three executives (35 percent) saying this is “absolutely essential.”

Calls for a more efficient recruitment process that provides for a better candidate experience.
•The top three recruitment challenges CEOs identified for their organizations are: ◦Lack of skilled candidates – 49 percent
◦Inefficient recruitment process – takes too long to fill jobs – 35 percent
◦Candidate experience is not as good as it could be – 25 percent

•Nearly half of CEOs (48 percent) say their companies have lost money due to inefficient recruiting.

Willingness to give HR a bigger role in the organization – with room to grow.
•A majority of CEOs (65 percent) agree that post-recession, HR opinions carry greater weight with senior management; nearly three fourths (73 percent) say that their HR leader has provided data that they have incorporated into their business strategy.
•92 percent of business leaders think HR executives can have broader influence by: ◦Providing actionable talent data and other research to help devise strategies to meet larger business goals (57 percent)
◦Showing ways to increase efficiencies or cut costs by better using the company’s human capital (57 percent)
◦Knowing what the company does, but also how everything works (52 percent)
◦Proactively working with other leaders to help solve business problems (51 percent)

Finance jobs in Vegas grow

The number of finance jobs in Vegas has climbed, according to recent labor statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Employment rose by 223,000 in June, compared with an average monthly gain of 250,000 over the prior 12 months.

In June, job gains occurred in professional and business services, health care, retail trade, financial activities, and in transportation and warehousing.

Health care added 40,000 jobs in June. Job gains were distributed among the three component industries–ambulatory care services (+23,000), hospitals (+11,000), and nursing and residential care facilities (+7,000).

Employment in health care had grown by an average of 34,000 per month over the prior 12 months.

In June, employment in financial activities increased by 20,000, with most of the increase in insurance carriers and related activities (+9,000) and in securities, commodity contracts, and investments (+7,000).

Commercial banking employment declined by 6,000. Employment in financial activities has grown by 159,000 over the year, with insurance accounting for about half of the gain.

Transportation and warehousing added 17,000 jobs in June. Employment in truck transportation continued to trend up over the month (+7,000) and has increased by 19,000 over the past 3 months.

Since a recent high in December 2014, employment in mining has declined by 71,000, with losses concentrated in support activities for mining.

Employment in other major industries, including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, information, and government, showed little or no change over the month.

Employment in food services and drinking places continued to trend up in June (+30,000) and has increased by 355,000 over the year. Employment in mining continued to trend down in June (-4,000).

Will salaries go up for Vegas jobs?

As unemployment rates fall, some experts are predicting that salaries will go up for Vegas jobs, among other locations.

While wages have been slow to recover, a new outlook from global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas indicates that wages, which are typically the last piece of the employment mix to recover, should see a healthy rebound in 2015.

Since the recovery began about 64 months ago, job gains have averaged 182,500 per month. That is significantly improves upon the 147,000 new jobs added per month during the 2003 – 2007 economic expansion.

Over the last year, job creation has increased to an average of 250,000 new jobs per month. The strongest year during the previous expansion saw average job gains top out at about 239,000 per month.

“The number of metropolitan areas with an unemployment rate below 5.0 percent is growing every month. In these areas, workers already may be difficult to find and there is anecdotal evidence of employers offering better wages and benefits to attract and retain talent,” said John A. Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

“The return of higher-skilled, higher-paying manufacturing and construction jobs should also lift wages around the country. Furthermore, as more light is shed on the growing income gap between the haves and have-nots, there appears to be more effort on the part of some to correct the imbalance. Whether, those efforts will be enough to move the scales remains to be seen, but the fact that it is being addressed at all, is certainly a promising development.”
